A bed'n'breakfast house in New York, Abingdon is something of a rare bird – even if the breakfast consists of a coupon allowing you to be served at the Brew Bar downstairs. Rooms go for $137 to $222 nightly at this West Village establishment.

The Algonquin Hotel - 59 West 44th Street, 212-840-6800.
The Algonquin is steeped in history. This is, after all, where Dorothy Parker and company held their famous Round Table drinking parties. The 165-room hotel's classy 1940's decor is said to have been lovingly preserved. Expect to pay $300-$400 for a room.

Gramercy Park Hotel - 2 Lexington Avenue (at 21st Street), 212-475-4320/800-221-4083.
70-year-old hotel is a bastion of "Olde World" charm so expect it to be a bit worn on the edges. Located next to lovely little (locked) park, within a stone's throw of the East Village, Midtown, etc. Hotel has 509 rooms and is moderately priced at $135 (single), $145 (double), $180 (suite).

Hotel Chelsea - 222 West 23rd Street, 212-243-3700.
You know this one. This is where Sid – or some strange phantom in the night – did in Nancy. Sounds inviting, huh. Nevertheless, you may have trouble booking one of the spacious rooms since most of the hotel's inhabitants are long-term guests. Rooms go for $2,000-$3,000 per month. Most have bathrooms; some have kitchens. All blood stains have been subsequently removed.

Larchmont Hotel - 27 West 11th Street, 212-989-9333.
The Larchmont provides an excellent way to lodge in Manhattan on a modest budget. Located on a brownstone-lined West Village street, the hotel is clean and cheery, yet affordable at $60-$100 a night for a room. There is a catch: shared bathrooms. This may be a small price to pay, however, for the hotel's impressively low rates.

SoHo Grand Hotel - 310 West Broadway, 212-965-3000/
800-965-3000.
SoHo district's only hotel. 367 rooms including four penthouse suites. Beautifully designed in an architectural tradition that evokes the neighborhood's cast-iron age. Close to galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Elegant and expensive. Prices range from $209-$349 per night with penthouses scaling the stratosphere at $949-$1149 a clip.
